The thesis focuses on Herodotus and his importance in historiography. The connection between Herodotus and his predecessors logographers is briefly presented – Herodotus also wrote about peoples and genealogy, however, he did not pay as much attention to myths as the logographers did. In addition to military history, Herodotus wrote about cultural, religious, economic and social history. Not only did he write about Greek history, but also of the history of other peoples, which further distinguishes him from most of the other ancient historians. Most of the accounts Herodotus included in his Histories were collected during his travels from oral sources, however, some were also collected from written sources. He used the autopsy method to verify sources, and the beginnings of historical criticism are also visible in the Histories.
