The topic of my thesis is the graphic design of packaging for two types of honey. The
emphasis is on the illustration inspired by the Art Nouveau period, especially the works of
the artist Alphonse Mucha. The plants shown on the label are indigenous varieties found in
the Gorski Kotar area in Croatia. This illustration of its aesthetic role informs us about the
composition of this product. In the theoretical part, I researched the Art Nouveau period, as
well as the role and method of packaging design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
I will answer questions about what packaging is, its function in the food industry, symbols
and their meaning, what the materials are and who the target audience is. I will also research
honey as a product, beekeeping as a profession and illustration. In the practical part, I find
a label that is aesthetically inspired by the style of Art Nouveau and Viennese Secession,
which is closely related to art nouveau, but with a greater emphasis on geometric shapes and
patterns. However, the label will be made in a modern way and for today’s consumers. The
goal is a balance between historical and modern artistic expression.
