In this master´s thesis, the author sought to answer the question of what content young adults address when communicating about sexuality with their partners in heterosexual relationships in relation to their intimate needs, desires, expectations and problems in different periods and circumstances of the relationship.
Eight participants took part in the study, five women and three men, who were between 18 and 30 years old and involved in a serious heterosexual relationship at the time of the interview. For the purpose of the research, the author compiled a semi-structured interview and analysed the obtained qualitative data using the method of grounded theory. From the results, six main areas related in terms of content and meaning were composed: the content of sexual communication, the dynamics of sexual communication, the development of sexuality and sexual communication, the importance of sexuality and sexual communication for a relationship, the specific characteristics of sexuality and the context of sexuality and sexual communication.
Regarding the content of discussion, sexual conversations are divided into seven areas: the physical aspect of sexuality, the psychological aspect of sexuality, the reproductive aspect of sexuality, the exploration of sexuality, sensitive topics in sexuality, past sexual experiences and relationships, and the holistic aspect of sexual communication. Within each of these areas, content topics are described in more detail.
Due to the complexity and multi-layered nature of sexual communication, its content, course and manner are closely related to various factors arising either from the individual, sexuality or the relationship between partners. In the course of the development and growth of partners and their relationship, there are many positive and negative changes and challenges that partners have to face and adapt to. In these situations, sexual communication plays a key role, as it facilitates the transition from problem to solution and enables partners to find their way back to each other, regardless of the difficulty of the situation, and to strengthen the space of physical and emotional intimacy between them.
The Master’s thesis represents an important contribution to the field of therapeutic and educational work with young adults in individual, partner and group treatment, especially in the field of sexuality. The findings of the master’s thesis testify to the extraordinary importance and positive impact of genuine, sincere and rich sexual communication within partner relationships and highlight the content from the field of sexuality that it would make sense to include in conversations with intimate partners. In addition, the author highlights the important connection between sexuality and communication and draws attention to the factors that influence the whole process within the relationship. At the same time, the task highlights areas that we as a society should pay more attention to in the future, such as breaking taboos and learning to communicate clearly, empathetically and openly with others.
