Introduction: Depression is one of the most common diseases today. It can affect people of all ages and occupations, and at the same time has serious consequences for quality of life. Psychotherapeutic approaches are being used more and more frequently and effectively to treat depression. Nurses are also involved in the process of psychotherapeutic treatment of patients. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the challenges nurses face in the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with depression, the nursing interventions with an emphasis on interventions in the process of psychotherapeutic treatment, the use of different approaches in the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with depression, and the involvement of nurses. Methods: The research conducted as part of the diploma thesis is based on the descriptive work method. We searched for relevant literature using a search string containing the following keywords: psychotherapy, depression and nurses. The Boolean operator AND was used between the keywords. We searched for literature in the period from August 2023 to November 2023. In the thesis, we included sources published
in the time period from January 2012 to November 2023. We included 20 units of literature in the analysis. Results: Nurses have good skills to independently implement various
psychotherapeutic interventions on patients with depression. Their approach is more holistic, and they successfully empower patients to cope with the challenges of daily life. However, they need support in the form of funding for their training in this area. Nurses are involved in the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with depression, but it is still not clearly defined which interventions are within their scope part of the psychotherapeutic treatment.
Discussion and conclusion: There are many gaps in the psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with depression. The differences between psychotherapy itself and psychotherapeutic interventions are not clearly defined. Moreover, psychotherapeutic interventions are part of the competencies of nurses in psychiatric nursing in some parts of the world, but not everywhere.
