The paper is concerned with short prose produced in the second half of the 20th century by Slovene writers in Austria, in both Carinthia and Vienna. Among Slovene Carinthian writers, the most interesting short prose works are those produced by Janko Messner. These display of clear influence of social realism, which the writer stretches into satire and the grotesque. Distinctive short prose is also written by Florijan Lipuš, who in the nineteen-sixties created intimate, lyrical pictures in which language played a highly visible role. In the middle generation of authors, interesting short prose works are produced by Anita Hudl, Kristjan Močilnik in Vinko Ošlak. Lev Detela, who moved to Vienna for political reasons, has produced a broad and distinctive range of short prose work. This author, who publishes in both Slovene and German, is known for his autobiographically based modernistic style.
