The aim of the thesis was to examine the opportunities and challenges of using open data in web application development, focusing on the Slovenian context. We explored how open data can foster innovation, increase transparency of public services, improve technological efficiency, and how it can be used in the development of web applications.
The study is based on an integrated methodology, including a comprehensive review of existing literature on the use of open data in Slovenia and the EU, a survey of 50 Slovenian citizens to determine their awareness and accessibility of open data, and a practical application through the development of a web application that uses an API to access open data. The study results showed a significant gap in the awareness and use of open data in Slovenia, suggesting the need for better availability and public awareness initiatives. The study also presents a set of best practices for developers that illustrate effective strategies for integrating open data into web solutions.
This study contributes to the broader reflection on open data and provides useful information for policymakers, developers, and stakeholders interested in harnessing the power of open data for social and technological progress.
