The master’s thesis researches the state of Slovene terminology in the field of astronomy by analysing the compiled English-Slovene Glossary of Astronomy. The glossary was based on source material from the list of recommended literature for a course on basic astronomical concepts at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, University of Ljubljana. Glossary compilation followed terminological theory and principles of terminographic work, presented primarily in works by Cabré, Vintar, and Wright and Budin. The thesis aimed to find out whether synonymy exists among Slovene equivalents in the glossary and the possible reasons contributing to the number of synonyms in the field. The study found that the number of synonyms among Slovene astronomical terms can be explained by the fact Slovene terminology of astronomy has not been standardised yet and the influence of English as a lingua franca both in astronomy and scientific communication in general. The compiled bilingual glossary of astronomy joins other terminological works that lay the groundwork for future research on synonymy and terminological variation in the field of astronomy.
