The aim of the master's thesis was to provide an overview of how and for what purposes libraries
abroad use personas, which elements they use when describing personas, and how these elements
vary depending on the type of library orservice. In Slovenia, the use of personas in libraries has not
yet become established, so the master's thesis could be helpful in the development and use of
personas for the needs of library services in Slovenia. In the theoretical part of thesis, we examined
the significance of understanding library users, the process of forming personas, and the potential
use of personasin libraries. In the empiricalsection, we selected specific examples of personasfrom
public and academic libraries and used content analysisto compare the elements used in describing
these personas. Through analysing information about the creation of personas found in literature
or on library websites, we examined the purpose behind forming personas and the process of their
development. By analysing examples of personas and information from literature, we discovered
that libraries abroad use personas for various library services, most commonly for designing library
websites. We found that the elements used in the description of persons differ based on their aim
or the library service for which the personas were created, rather than the type of library.
