Sickness absenteeism in Slovenia is increasing annually and causing negative consequences. To reduce the causes of sickness absenteeism, preventive measures with systemic approaches are required, as well as raising awareness among organizations and employees about the importance of health for work and life. Health promotion in the workplace is a preventive measure by the state to maintain and strengthen the health of employees in the work environment.
This master's thesis compares health promotion programs in the workplace at ministries and their constituent bodies and assesses the impact and causes of sickness absenteeism. The research was conducted through an online survey, and the causes were investigated through an analysis of sickness absenteeism indicators in the public administration, with results compared to the Slovenian average.
The analysis of the results of comparing health promotion programs in the workplace revealed that the programs are diverse, focused on physical and mental health, but there is still a need for improvements in identifying the causes of sickness absenteeism among employees. The most common cause of sickness absenteeism in the public administration is diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue, which increases with the age of employees. In 2021, the most notable cause of newer modern disease, such as COVID-19.
To manage sickness absenteeism, it is crucial to cooperate and take action at all levels of society by establishing a legislative framework that will ensure the proper use of rights under sickness absenteeism, implementing regular preventive measures to create healthy work environments, and strengthening employee awareness of the impact of their actions.
