In my graduate thesis I researched the influence of social environment on developing digital literacy in adolescents. Preliminary research showed that family and social background of students have an important role in understanding and usage of digital technologies. Consequently, they also have an influence on developing digital literacy. The aim of graduate thesis was to find out, how social environment influences developing digital literacy in adolescents in general. But because the social environment has many cornerstones, I focused mainly on socio-economic status of the family and immigration background. In theoretical part of my graduation thesis, I discussed the key concepts of social environment, digital literacy, computer and information literacy and digital competences. At the same time, I gave some attention to the meaning of socio-economic status and immigration background of the family and to the connection between traditional and digital literacy. The empirical part of the graduate thesis consists of empirical research of a quantitative nature, which I carried out with the help of an online survey questionnaire. Based on the analysis of obtained data, it was found that the social environment partially influences the development of digital literacy in adolescents, but
not to the extent that previous research confirms. The social status of the family has much greater influence than economic status and immigration background. The parent’s education and profession play a big role in this.
