The thesis undertakes the comparison of two contemporary biographies about Milan Kundera, published in distinct cultural and linguistic contexts. It's about a French biography titled Milan Kundera, une vie d´écrivain, authored by Jean-Dominique Brierre, and a Czech biography by Jan Novák titled Kundera: Český život a doba. The primary objective of this paper is to illustrate the disparities between the selected biographies by examining selected key events in Kundera's life. I compare the structure and the content of both works as well as individual chapters or passages dedicated to three works of Kundera, namely Já, truchlivý bůh, Žert in Život je jinde. Additionally, the study delves into the expressive elements within the Czech biography by Jan Novák, which, through its stylization, conveys a certain level of reluctance towards the subject author, thereby influencing the reader's perspective. Finally, I also examine the reception of compared biographies in French, Czech and Slovenian cultural spheres, and present the key reactions from the media and intellectuals.
