Tourism is an important part of the economy in the Dolenjska region. To achieve its development it is necessary to face certain challenges for the destination to become more competitive and to ensure the accessibility and adaptability of the tourism supply. The intention of this master’s thesis is to analyse and interpret the tourism potential of Dolenjska for the purposes of spatial and development planning. Spatial management and planned spatial interventions are already outlined in municipalities’ spatial plans. However, in cases where the contents of the plans exceed municipality boundaries, coordination at the regional level is necessary. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning confirms that spatial management at the regional level is of crucial importance for the spatial development of the country. Therefore, in the year 2022, the ministry began implementing activities which will help the development regions to prepare a regional spatial plan. In this master’s thesis the analysed state of the spatial development of tourism in the Dolenjska region is defined based on a study of existing sources and literature, as well as the analyses of statistical data and results of two surveys. The results of the thesis are determined priority areas for tourism development – wine-growing areas, the river Krka, Gorjanci and thermal spas – a cartographically presented areas with the biggest development potential and a proposal for a further course of action.
