Cholera is an epidemic disease that appeared in Europe in the 19th century, including on Slovenian soil. The disease has caused fear and panic among people because of its symptoms and horrific death. To prevent its spread, the authorities have taken a number of measures, at the level of the organisation of the state and at the level of everyday life. Due to a lack of knowledge about the disease, there was no real guidance, but various home-brewed medicines were widely available. As bacteriology and other sciences have developed, attitudes towards hygiene have changed, both at national level and in everyday life.
