The diploma thesis Aesthetic reintegration of missing parts in impasto paintings focuses on the problem of filling the gaps of impasto paintings, where the information about the original surface texture has been lost. It deals with the question through the painting Poletno prisluškovanje, created by Vida Fakin in 1964.
In the first, theoretical section of the thesis I`m researching the ethics of recreating the surface texture and the practical approach to doing so. I was interested in the amount of educated guessing one can afford when reintegrating a lost part of paint layers back into the painting.
In the second, practical section I focused on testing different combinations of binders and fillers to determine which infiller offers a set of qualities, optimal for this specific case, and applied my findings to the restoration of the painting Poletno prisluškovanje. First I cleaned the painting and consolidated the paint layers and then, after considering the ethics of aesthetic reintegration, I decided to infill and retouch the missing parts.
