Gold complexes are rapidly being investigated in medicine for the treatment of various diseases, including as potential anticancer agents. In the last few years, studies on gold complexes have experienced a surge. There is a large amount of pre-clinical research, but only one complex is currently in clinical use.
My aim was to synthesize gold(I) and gold(III) complexes with monomethylated pyrithiones (1-hydroxypyridine-2(1H)-thione). First, I prepared pyrithiones with a methyl group from 2-bromomethylpyridines by oxidation and thiolation reactions, which were then used to bind to gold(I) and gold(III) ions. The compounds were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), UV-Vis and IR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and CHN elemental analysis. I was also able to obtain crystals of some compounds and to determine the crystal structures of three gold(I) complexes by X-ray diffraction on single crystals.
