Introduction: In recent years, the management of mental health patients has shifted from traditional management, which mostly involved medication therapy and nursing care, to advanced holistic management. This has also led to the development of advanced mental health nursing, which puts postgraduate nurses at the forefront, as their training has provided them with advanced professional competencies enabling them to carry out additional, more complex activities. Purpose: The purpose of this diploma work is to present the activities and competencies of nurses with advanced knowledge in the field of mental health in Slovenia and other developed countries of the world, where advanced nursing practice has already been developed. Methods: The descriptive method was used. Using the following keywords in Slovene: napredna zdravstvena nega, duševno zdravje, aktivnosti, kompetence, as well as the following keywords in English: advanced nursing, mental health, activities, competencies, we searched the CINAHL, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar databases. We selected Slovenian and English research results published between 2017 and 2023. 13 research results were included in the study. Results: We identified 25 codes, which were grouped into two categories: (1) activities and competencies in developed countries; (2) development factors. Discussion and conclusion: Professional competencies and activities for advanced mental health nursing are poorly developed in Slovenia, as very few nurses have at least a master's degree required to provide advanced mental health nursing. The development of professional competencies and activities in the field of advanced mental health nursing is a complex and lengthy process, as a number of national and headline measures need to be taken.
