The following master thesis explores the phenomenon of online exhibitions of contemporary visual art. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to a historical overview and a theoretical analysis of such exhibitions, which we intend to use in order to highlight certain characteristics of viewing and curating art online. In the second part, we focus on the analysis of selected examples of recent online exhibitions, through which we try to present their different forms and reflect on the relevance of using the web for the presentation of artworks. The key questions are in what ways visual art is seen and understood online, and whether the experience of an artwork and information about an exhibition can be conveyed online in the same way as in physical exhibitions.
