In the today's digital age, we are witnessing the continuous development of information and communication technologies. Therefore, an important task of educational institutions is the integration and use of digital technologies in teaching and the development of digital competences in students and teachers. In the task, we determined the reading motivation of fifth graders for reading printed and electronic material. The research showed that fifth graders have a slightly higher reading motivation for reading traditional material compared to electronic material, although the differences were not statistically significant. Furthermore, we found that girls have a statistically significantly higher reading motivation than boys and that the type of media has a greater influence on their motivation than boys. Girls had a lower motivation to read electronic material compared to printed material, but it did not change significantly for boys. The school must strive to raise motivated readers, make them digitally literate and develop different strategies for them to cope with the challenges of the modern digital society.
