In the master's thesis, the author researches how personal assistance affects the life of disabled people. The focus of the thesis is on the lives of disabled people before and after the implementation of the Personal Assistance Act (2019). The research asks why some personal assistance users choose their parents as personal assistants. The author carried out the research based on the interviews with users of personal assistance. The results have shown that parents can be a good choice, as they well-acquianted with the needs of the users, and they are also more available in terms of time. One of the reasons for choosing a parent as a personal assistant is also related to the desire for reciprocity on the part of users, since the employment of a personal assistant is financially more favorable than the institution of a family assistant. The independent life of a person with a disability is conditioned by various factors, and it is not necessarily excluded by the employment of a family member as a personal assistant.
