Machine translation has become an important part of the modern translation process. Despite its widespread use, it has been unable to completely replace human translators. Technical texts are among the most frequently translated texts in the world and are governed by specific rules.
The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine the characteristics of technical translation and machine translation as well as the post-editing of machine translations; to check the usability of machine translation for translations from French to Slovenian based on the translation of a vehicle user manual; and identify the main challenges that translators could encounter when using such approach. As expected, most mistakes are due to the use of incorrect terminology, which was often too general. Other types of mistakes are also observed – mistranslations and
grammatical, orthographic, and stylistic mistakes are examined as well. Finally, some guidelines and recommendations are listed, which could be of use to everyone using machine translation while translating technical texts, user manuals in particular.
