The master's thesis deals with the genesis of heroes and their worship in the second half of the 19th century, based on the case study of the Italian national hero Giuseppe Garibaldi. During this period, there was a reading revolution and an exponential growth in the printed circulation of books and newspapers. The newly literate public wanted to read stories about everyday people who stepped out of the ordinary and became an object of worship and inspiration. These individuals certainly included the Italian guerrilla commander Giuseppe Garibaldi, who became internationally famous for his military actions during the unification of Italy. Books, articles, poems were written about him, he was portrayed in pictures, monuments were erected to him, and mass receptions were organized. The main theme of the work is the search for the difference between his greatest actions and excessive romanticization by publicists of the time. In addition, the work tries to show who in the political background was interested in the heroization of Garibaldi, how they encouraged it in the media, how they tried to manipulate him and how Garibaldi reacted to this.
