We were interested in the subject description of textbooks and workbooks and the correctness of determining the codes of the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) in COBIB.SI. As the purpose and goal of the research of the master’s thesis we set ourselves the development of guidelines for the content of such materials. Using the content analysis method, we analysed all bibliographic records describing textbooks or workbooks created for publications published in 2020. Through the selected method, nine groups of subject description patterns were identified in the sample. Among these, we focused on the three most common ones, in which we described subject description patterns, summarized errors, and proposed guidelines for more consistent subject descriptions for the Textbook and Workbook groups. The guidelines are based on the cataloguing practice in the Slovenian union catalogue and some changes have been proposed to help differentiate between different materials. In the main sample, 17. 5 percent of the records contained errors in the field of the UDC with the most common errors being related to incorrect assignments of the main classes and common auxiliaries of the UDC according to the topic of the described material. Fewer errors found were related to typos and the incorrect assembly of UDC codes. The research confirms that more consistent subject description could be achieved with these guidelines. We also hope to reduce the proportion of irregularities in the catalogue by drawing the attention of cataloguers to the most common errors.
