This thesis tries to present the development of Trbovlje from 1804, when coal mining began, until the first years after the First World War. It also describes the development of the city since Slovenia became its own nation. In addition to the historical overview, it also covers the industrial development of the city, how and why the mining colonies were formed, what was the social structure of the population. The beginnings were difficult for the coal miners, as the impassability of the place did not allow the export of coal, but the construction of the railway quickly turne the situation to the other direction. The development of Trbovlje was rapid, especially after the arrival of capitalist society, which also built other industrial infrastructure, which helped to speed up the development of the city. Workers performed extremely dangerous work for which they were paid minimally, which led to many strikes that were also protected by nationalistic tendencies. There was not typical nationalism in Trbovlje, but the workers united in several organizations for the sake of fighting for better living conditions, through which they also wanted to preserve Slovenian culture and language. In Trbovlje there were Germans who led the mines and other companies and they wanted to Germanize the place, but the locals didn't allow that. Today, Trbovlje is one of the largest Slovenian cities, which was badly affected by the closure of the mine, but in recent years the city is picking up and developing again.
