This paper reviews monastic communities in Slovenia. In the introduction, the scope and focus
of the research is presented along with methodological directions and challenges of fieldwork.
In the first chapters the concept of monasticism and its history is defined. The main body of
the thesis consists of three parts, the first deals with the catholic tradition especially with
carthusians and the charterhouse Pleterje. In the second part the buddhist forest tradition and
the monastery Samanadipa are introduced. Finally, International Society for Krishna
Consciousness and its branch in Ljubljana are presented. The last part is a comparison of
particular aspects of monastic life, which is followed by conclusion. Field diary in which
personal impressions are collected is added as an appendix.
