Reactions between 1-(pyridine-2-yl)thiourea and selected transition metals were performed as a method to synthesize coordination compounds that would contain 1-(pyridine-2-yl)thiourea as a ligand. In total 13 reactions were performed, with 1-(pyridine-2-yl)thiourea (L) and KSCN participating in all of them and transition metal salts being swapped. The following metal ions were used: Ni2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Fe3+ and Fe2+.
After synthesis was done, crystals were analysed with X-ray structural analysis. All products were also analysed with NMR and IR analysis.
According to the analyses performed, I can conclude that four new coordination compounds were obtained which were [NiL4(NCS)2], [Pb(CH3COO)L(NCS)]n, [CdL2(NCS)2]n and [ZnL2(NCS)2]. Elemental sulfur, KNO3 and 1-(pyridine-2-yl)thiourea that crystallized in a different unit cell than previously known and published were also observed in some reactions.
