This thesis is a study of sexual violence in the South Korean military. Due to the increasing news about suicides of soldiers who have been victims of sexual violence, I wanted to research the situation and the cultural and historical background of South Korea. In my thesis, I focus on the analysis of the factors of sexual violence, research on Korean history, Korean military culture, and aspects of Korean society, in order to find out how all this affects the situation of sexual violence and what these elements have in common. Based on the analysis of the facts, I was able to deduce that the military organization is a perfect breeding ground for the implementation of sexual violence due to many peculiarities, such as the hierarchy, the process of creating soldiers, masculinity and military service, which is one of the consequences of the Korean War, and that also aspects of the Korean society such as gibun (기분), inhwa (인화) and Confucianism can affect the severity of the situation. Factors of sexual violence, such as callousness, dominance of the victim and demonstration of power and dominance, are closely related to a violent and hierarchical military culture. The social environment in Korea, with its collectivity, large difference in power, avoidance of conflicts and constant maintenance of good relations, especially by subordinates, makes the situation even more difficult.
