Programmable logic controllers are indispensable in modern manufacturing processes, but they are limited by industry standards. For this reason we started with the development of an input-output interface for industrial electronics embedded systems, which allows changes and development of interface core with custom ways for system control. Designed input/output interface has a central unit which is based on stand-alone computer and separate microcontrollers which are used for detecting input states or setting output states of connections. Developed interfaces are tested for their properties and capabilities of I2C communication, as well as the consistency of their input/output signal characteristics in voltage range of 12 V to 24 V. Test results confirm the intended working operations up to a voltage of 28 V. The control program enables detection and triggering signals with automatic recognition of connected interfaces. Interfaces enable further development of custom or the use of open-source software solutions for system control.
