The focus of this diploma thesis is finding the possibility of ILS landing system use at Portorož Airport. Presently approach to the airport can be conducted using the techniques of visual flying skills or with reliance on the VOR and NDB navigational aids. The ILS landing system would allow for more precise guidance towards the touchdown zone of the runway and aid pilots in low visibility weather conditions. In the first part of the diploma thesis, we present the current approach options available to pilots and the principles of their operation. Principles of the ILS system operation are also shown.
In the second part, two examples of possible ILS installation are shown, and their pros and cons discussed. Next, we focus on use potential of the ILS system at Portorož Airport, therefore air traffic statistics and detailed weather conditions are analyzed. Our findings show that ILS system use would be beneficial during winter operations, where low visibility is common, though the system would not be economically viable due to most aircraft landings occurring in good visibility period during summer season, where less precise navigational aids may be used.
