The diploma thesis presents development of tapestry and carpet collection, based on the work of architect Ivan Vurnik. It was created in collaboration with the Center of Architecture of Slovenia and presented at the exhibition Prepletanja, which was a part of an event called Vurnikovi dnevi.
The theoretical part presents the history of making carpets and tapestries around the world. Different techniques that were developing through the years in different cultures are researched. One of the most important tapestries is The Bayeux tapestry. Its details of covering and uncovering the base fabric are guidance at developing tapestries in the experimental part. The main inspiration is the last artwork of Ivan Vurnik, the chapel of Francis of Assisi.
This is followed by research of the development of a rug making technique called tufting. I first tried this technique while making the diploma thesis. The theoretical part also presents the meaning of handwork and rug making trends today and a few contemporary designers and textile artists which produce high quality art.
The experimental part includes the process of development of illustration and motif for repetition and creating harmonic composition, impressed by the details of inspirational artwork. The emphasis is on textile techniques punchneedle and tufting, which I improved on while making the products. The main motif was brought from two dimensional patterns and illustrations to the textile version and created a contemporary collection of tapestries and carpets, called Sončna pesem v zankah.
