TiAlN PVD coatings are most often used to protect cutting tools for cutting steel 42CrMo4, but they differ in application technology, titanium-aluminium ratio, coating structure, etc. In the theoretical part, the theory of milling, tool wear and PVD coating technology is presented. As part of experimental work, we have in the first phase analysed the properties of individual coatings (adhesion, thickness, hardness, wear resistance and coefficient of friction) and in the second part tested the milling tools on the machining center and intervally measured the VB wear.
Of all the tested TiAlN coatings, the best was the coating applied with HiPIMS method, while the monobloc structure with the ARC evaporation technology proved to be the least suitable but still offers good protection against the uncoated tool.
