Purpose: The purpose of this Masters thesis was to find out how much impact does a team minute break have on a intermediate and on a final result of the handball match and what are the differences between the losers and the winners of the match if they they do use a minute break.
Methods: The study analyzed 82 matches that were played at the Women's Member World Championships in Japan in 2019. The analysis included only matches that ended with the victory or defeat of one of the teams. Of all the matches played in the championship, we did not analyze only five matches that ended in a draw. We were interested in the minutes of the break and the differences in the results before, during and after the minute of the break. The data were processed using the SPSS software package.
Results and findings: With the help of the obtained results, we found that the minute of the break is required on average by teams whose result is in a negative trend in that period, regardless of whether the team is the winner or loser in the end. A team minute of rest basically helps the team to establish a new way of playing and can change the outcome of the match. On average, the results obtained in our study indicate the correctness of this statement.
In the research, we came to the conclusion that defeated teams often reach for a minute break, as they want to change the dynamics of opponents and break a series of goals with interruptions. However, the results show that even the use of a team minute of rest for teams that have a negative result trend cannot always change the further course of the match, but can even lead to an even greater drop in the result.
Considering that the handball match lasts 60 minutes, we also looked at the result correlation 10 minutes before the minute of the break and during only the minute of the break, which is statistically related. If there is a big difference before the minute of the break, there will also be a big difference between the minute of the break.
The obtained results indicate that the time choice for the minute break is very important and can affect the final result, but we must be aware of the circumstances during the team break and consider other components that make up a handball match (referee decisions, fans, injuries ,…).
