In their youth, young people encounter various obstacles from social integration to problems with school, peers and parents. It is the process when an individual forms their personality. This is the time when young people start to build their life which the majority will live later, however, there are many important factors that contribute to the quality of it.
The youth is a special, sensitive and heterogenous social group. It represents the part of population which, from the perspective of material and social security, is included either into the educational process or the labour market. Modernisation has influenced the youth greatly, as they encounter it daily through basic institutions, family and private circles, school and free time. To avoid such instances Slovenia has many social protection programs in place, which help the youth and especially vulnerable adolescents coming from socially insecure families. The purpose of this thesis is to establish the current situation of the youth, the issues of social exclusion and the importance of the social protection programs, which aim to prevent exclusion. The thesis aims to identify why individuals participate in such programs and why not.
The social protection programs are primarily intended for the youth struggling with their environment (parents, peers…) and vice versa. The thesis presents reasons for inclusion; however, the interviews were carried out with those who do not wish to take part in the centres as well.
