Intonation is a feature of prosody which tends to be neglected while learning English as a foreign language. The purpose of the thesis is to examine the knowledge and usage of English intonation when it comes to Slovene students studying at University of Ljubljana. The research of this thesis focuses on how our mother tongue influences our intonation whilst speaking in English. Moreover, it discusses whether learning about the English intonation at the university level is too late to internalize it to such an extent to be able to use it correctly in everyday speech. For the execution of the research, 60 people were asked to participate in the reading of a dialogue in English. Half of the participants are students of English Language and Literature studying at the MA level; the other half are students who do not study English but something else at the master’s level. The recorded readings are analysed in terms of tonality, tonicity, and tones. The study concludes that in most cases students of English outperform the other group of participants not studying English.
