This master's thesis offers a deepened insight into the phenomenon of romantic friendship as a specific historic institution. It emphasises its placement in the 19th century Slovene environment. The theoretical part of the thesis presents the global dimension of romantic friendship and elucidates its characteristics and reasons for its development, it furthermore analyses it according to gender and lastly it discusses various perspectives from which this phenomenon can be researched. Empirical research constitutes the central part of the thesis. This research encompasses a quantitatively analysed set of correspondence and literature by 19th century Slovene intellectuals or authors. With the help of indicators developed on the basis of specialist literature in the fields of history and literary science, this master's thesis establishes the presence of romantic friendship's central elements in correspondence and literature, analyses them and compares to the findings of specialist literature. The goal of this thesis is to prove the embeddedness of romantic friendship in the 19th century Slovene emotional landscape, although few have dealt with this subject in the Slovene literary space.
