The rapid economic upturn in the last decades has led to a significant increase in the amount of goods produced and consumed, where different natural resources are exploited and pollution is increased. The consequences of extractivism are felt mainly in economically and politically less stable countries. These are presented on cases in Gunjur in The Gambia, where field research has been conducted, on which the content of the thesis is based. The studied areas were a sandpit and fishmeal plant Golden Lead, located on the outskirts of Gunjur and which influence the environment as well as the population directly. The attitude of local people towards the factory, sandpit and the environment in general, their understanding of the concept of “environmental preservation”, the role of environmental organisations that are active in the local community, with one organisation being presented in detail, and their interaction with the locals are presented. All the work is based on the analysis of the results of the survey questionnaire conducted during the field work, and participatory observation.
