In my master thesis I explore the theories and methods focusing on the transformation and valuation of rubbish in the context of art and creative thinking. I am interested in the relationship between art, consumption, and waste. How is waste used as an art material to represent or draw attention to certain themes? I discuss everyday themes such as the role of time, space, material abundance, and free choice, all of which I question in my own way.
Waste is associated with luxury and excess, but in the modern world it is also the main means and strategy of survival and adaptation for different people. Litter is an open potential for re-use of materials and products.
Western society is commonly defined as a consumer society since mass production and consumption underpin not only the economy but also our lifestyles and cultural models. This is clear when we look at how politics, the market and the media implicitly and explicitly emphasise the importance of consumption for our existence. In the description of the practical work, I discuss my own creative approach through a personal ecology or rather some kind of a code of ethics. I describe four different works of art that evolve into each other by recycling and reusing materials and ideas.
