The master thesis is divided into two long parts. In the first one, which is primarily
theoretical, I am explaining the historical development of craft, art, and design. Its
purpose is to provide a better understanding of their relationships and to explain
under which principles they work. My main research focus is on the position of
craft and its role. I begin defining characteristics of craft through the comparison
with art and design but later on, I list them independently as well. Since ceramics is my primary field of interest I write about it in the last chapter of the first part of my master thesis.
The second part is focused on my artistic work. I am exploring the relationship
between a human, an object and art. By focusing on the traditional role that
ceramic objects have in our lives, I am looking for definitions of an (un)useful
object and its function. My master thesis concludes by presenting the possibilities
of implementing traditional craft techniques into an object that is considered to be
an artwork.
