The purpose of the graduation thesis is to propose solutions for improvement and unifying the data points that are kept in the database of the Mountaineering Association of Slovenia. The altitude of characteristic points, such as peaks, saddles and starting points, is stated differently on different sources (different mountain, tourist and topographic maps, topographic databases and websites). The static GNSS method was used to determine the 3D-position of the selected fourteen peaks, three starting points and two saddles. We analyzed the reasons for the differences between the heights from the topographic base and from the digital terrain model. After reviewing all the results, we found that the differences were most often due to incorrect determination of the horizontal position, errors in transcription from the topographic base or the choice of source for altitude data. A terrain point cloud, which is the result of laser scanning of the terrain, has proven to be a reliable source of altitude data.
