This paper is both a theoretical and an empirical study, addressing the lean approach and thinking within an organisation. The main topic of the first, theoretical part is lean thinking, which is detailed and described with regard to the beginning of lean manufacture, followed by a description of lean logistics and management. In order for leanness to be expressed and used, a subchapter describes two methods, the Kaizen and the 5S methods, which both serve as a basis for the empirical part.
The second, empirical part presents the ALFA SP Logistics company and solutions to two of their problems. The first problem, which is related to the optimisation of archive and positioning map management, is solved using the 5S method – by labelling shelves and using company's central information system. The second problem, solved using the Kaizen method, is related to the act of sending a traffic transport sheet (CMR) to clients, with an emphasis on eliminating printing and editing the document in the PDF format (portable document format). Using the SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats), these two examples are analysed in tables, showing strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities for improvement. At the end of each solution, savings in terms of time and money are calculated and described.
