The thesis places its focus on all important famines that plagued Europe in the 19th century in chronological order. The overview covers the year without a summer 1816; the potato famine in Ireland and related potato famine in Scotland; the famine in Finland and related famine in Sweden; and the famine in Russia. Finally, a brief overview was made of the famines and food shortages that burdened the Slovenian territory in the 19th century. The overview of each famine seeks to present its complexity and wants to illustrate that the causes and consequences are not as unambiguous as they seem at first glance.
