Gears made of conventional materials are increasingly being replaced by polymer gears. In many areas like white goods, household appliances, automotive industry this trend is noticeable. Polymer gears have some weak points, however a possibility of injection moulding mass production is one of their decisive advantages. To meet the design requirements and correct operation of the gears, it is crucial to produce gears within the defined tolerances. Dimensionally inappropriate gears can result in increased noise, wear and heating, leading to premature failure. The injection molded gears made of four different polymer materials have been examined. Evaluation of gears using different measuring methods, such as classical measuring with micrometer and modern digital microscope has been performed. We concluded the final product is influenced by material choice. Classical measuring by micrometer has been recognised as a more reliable method.
