In this thesis, we designed and illustrated 32 cards with games of the ‘Gibalna abeceda’
(Movement alphabet) based on the ideas given by the educational care institution ‘Dobra
teta’ (Good Auntie). 25 of the cards each begin with a different letter from the Slovenian
alphabet. There are also five cards called ‘Tetinih najboljših 5’ (Auntie's top 5), one called
‘Tetina čarobna kartica’ (Auntie's magic card) and a card with the instructions. We also
designed appropriate product packaging and created a set of symbols illustrating the skills
that children can acquire through the games of ‘Gibalna abeceda’.
In the theoretical part, we researched illustrations and graphic design for children. We
also studied the didactics of cards and dealt with the importance of board games,
especially educational ones. We introduced the private kindergarten ‘Dobra teta’ and the
origin of its project ‘Tetino igrišče’ (Auntie's playground), which includes the ‘Gibalna
abeceda’.
In the practical part, we presented the general idea and card specifications as well as
analyzed the characters designed by Andreja Hančič. We also defined the characters'
shading, target group, and typography, along with the colour palette and tools used for
design and illustration. We schematically presented different text layouts and illustrations
and defined the integration of characters in different environments. Using an example,
we showed the design and illustration for one of the backgrounds and animals. We
described in more detail the production of four representative cards of the ‘Gibalna
abeceda’ and four skill symbols. We also presented the design of the box and the
illustrations on it.
In the end, we dissected the first five cards of the Gibalna abeceda and listed the results
of the box design. We critically evaluated the final product, wrote down suggestions for
improvements and outlined the lessons learned through the process.
