Pyrrolones (also hydroxypyrroles) are an important group of heterocycles with
numerous applications. In my diploma thesis I wanted to present synthetic methods for the
synthesis of simple 5-substituated pyrrolin-4-ones. Substituted pyrrolin-4-ones, that do not
include large molecular scaffolds, where the pyrrole ring is barely a small part of the
structure, are rarely synthesized and not many methods are known. In my diploma thesis I
first presented the most common methods for the synthesis of pyrroles (chapter 3). In chapter
4 I described known methods for direct synthesis of pyrrolin-4-ones and subsequent reactions
for addition of substituent(s) on position 5. Application of pyrrol-4-ones in asymmetric
organocatalysis is presented as an example in chapter 5.
