The main chapter of this dissertation presents authors and texts that mention and describe the defense system Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. It is a classical era defense sistem, that was mainly built in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Its function was to defend and control the area between Italy and Pannonia. Due to poor organization, the system died out in the 5th century AD. This chapter is followed by an overview of archeological research of the defense system and a presentation of two of the better-preserved fortifications AD Pirum and Castra.
