Ballet and literature are two different but related forms of art. Many famous ballets were created at the suggestion of an already well-known literary work. The diploma thesis briefly presents the origins of ballet on a global scale and the development of Slovenian ballet from its beginnings to the present day. It goes on to define the concept of a template, followed by the libretto and the script, which represent an intermediate element between the literary work and the final ballet performance. Next is a definition of the terms adaptation and dramatization, which represent the process of transformation of a literary work into another medium. The diploma also contains some examples of ballets based on literary templates by Slovenian authors. In the next part it shows how classical ballet replaces storytelling in the absence of speech. Most often, this is through facial expressions, movements, music, stage set-up and costumes. The spectator is always involved in the interpretation of the ballet performance. In the last part of the diploma thesis, on the example of the adaptation of the ballet performance The Nutcracker - Christmas Story, it is shown how this ballet tells the story with the help of the above elements, and how these elements are interconnected to get a ballet performance. Ballet Nutcracker - Christmas Story is an adaptation of two literary works, so the ballet performance combines elements of both.
