Introduction: Male menopause or andropause is a state of hormonal changes due to low levels of the hormone testosterone. Adverse symptoms appear that affect the health and quality of men’s daily lives. Testosterone levels begin to decline between the ages of 20 and 30. Symptoms of low testosterone levels show up between the ages of 40 and 50. Purpose: The purpose of the present diploma work is to present a review of the literature on the topic of andropause in aging men and to present the importance of appropriate education of health workers and awareness of men for early detection and appropriate treatment to improve the quality of life. Methods: We used a descriptive method of work by reviewing experts in the scientific literature we found using remote access to DiKUL digital libraries, and by browsing in international databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, Taylor and Francis Online, and Google Scholar. The review was conducted between August and October 2020. The time frame was used in the literature search, from 2010 to 2020. The included articles were published between 2008 and 2020. 51 units of literature were included in the literature review, 14 are Slovenian and 37 are English. The literature was searched with keywords related to the topic of the thesis. Results: The final analysis included 8 studies, which were presented in the tables. Studies show that men have poor knowledge about the andropause process, symptoms and signs, and treatment. Most men experience symptoms of andropause, but very few know how to deal with it. Men have poor knowledge about this physiological process and for many, it is a sensitive topic, that most men don’t want to discuss. Educating men about the hormonal changes brought by the transition to the middle years would help men cope with this more easily and effectively and also seek help to improve their quality of life. Discussion and conclusion: In reviewing the literature, we identified the main features, symptoms, signs, and treatment for andropause. We also found that men have poor knowledge about this process and also lack of quality research in the field of andropause. Extensive research would be needed in Slovenia to determine the prevalence of andropause and knowledge and awareness of men and health workers about this process.
