Introduction: Bipolar disorder, including its various subtypes, is one of the ten leading causes of disability globally. One of the main problems of bipolar disorder is its changing nature, so it is important that healthcare professionals and caregivers of patients with bipolar disorder are aware of the impact of factors influencing its development after basic life activities. Purpose: The purpose of the diploma thesis is to present the health care of a patient with bipolar disorder after basic life activities with the help of a review of professional and scientific literature. Methods: In the diploma thesis we used a descriptive method with a systematic review of the literature. In the search we used the time frame between 2010 and 2020. We searched the literature in Slovene and English and used the keywords bipolarna motnja (bipolar disorder), temeljne življenjske aktivnosti (basic life activities), depresija (depression), manija (mania), medicinske sestre (nurses). The search was performed in the databases DiKul, Cinahl, PubMed and Cobib.si. Six articles were included in the analysis. The articles were evaluated on an eight-point scale and the quality of the evidence was assessed. Results: Bipolar disorder is a severe mental disorder with serious consequences for the daily lives of patients and their caregivers. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of extreme mood swings. On average, patients suffer from manic, depressive, hypomanic, or mixed symptoms about half the time despite treatment. The treatment of bipolar disorder is complex in nature. Patients can be diagnosed only after ten years after the onset of the disease, so the incidence is higher than the data of the treated patients show. Discussion and conclusion: Managing bipolar disorder poses a challenge to all health care providers, including nurses with andvanced skills. The emphasis should be on accurately identifying manic, hypomanic, and depressive episodes. It is important for nursing staff to participate in the treatment of the patient to enable him to learn about his disorder and acquire the necessary knowledge or skills to reduce the problems caused by it. This encourage the individual to be more motivated to rehabilitate and manage medications. This makes it easier to return to normal life and thus faster and shorter recovery procedures. Nursing care for patients with bipolar includes identifying the needs for nursing care, its implementation and its evaluation
