The thesis focuses on the concept of security on cruise ships, from the very construction of a ship to the safety equipment for passengers and crew in the event of an accident. The thesis offers a description of the navigation and rescue equipment used in case of need to leave the ship. A special focus is given to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which also applies to passenger ships. As an example of a serious accident, the thesis presents the chronological course and rescue measures taken during the Costa Concordia passenger ship accident, which occurred in 2012 off the coast of the Italian Giglio Island.
