The bachelor’s thesis discusses religious groups in Syria, their effects on Syrian society, and effects that change the groups in question. Because of physical and social geographical, political and historical reasons, Syria is an ethnically and religiously very diverse country. Besides the prevailing Sunnism, there are many other Islamic denominations, numerous Christian branches (Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, etc.) and other religions. Due to the civil war, the country is facing religious fundamentalism and a mass migration, which effects the structure of religion in Syria. The thesis comprises a description of religion and religious groups, a short geographical and historical outline of the country, a detailed overview of ethnic and religious groups in Syria, and the effect of the civil war on the size and structure of religious groups.
