Since Milko Kos’ work describing the topography of medieval Ljubljana was published in 1955, the researches have made new discoveries that extend our knowledge of that time and place. The work of both archaeologist and historians has resulted in new conclusions which complement and partly correct Kos’ work.
In this diploma thesis, I wanted to present the research of the topography of medieval Ljubljana which was conducted after 1955. The research is arranged into four sections – the sequence of the foundation of the city districts, the river Ljubljanica, districts of Ljubljana, and the city wall. Additionally, I wanted to present an overview of the medieval history of Ljubljana.
Alongside Milko Kos’ Srednjeveška Ljubljana: Topografski opis mesta in okolice, the monograph Srednjeveška Ljubljana = Medieval [Ljubljana] has proved as the most important source for this thesis. The monograph, which is a joint project of many authors, appeared together with an exhibition of the same name.
